Before I click on that, did it refuse to let you go?
Nah, I've never had any problems just being there, but i wouldn't click on anything, its one big conglomeration of ads

I suspect there was some sleight of hand there. For example, if you energize the speaker I could see it working, but not as he tried to portray it.
I had the same thought, if you were to vary the strength of the magnet it should work fine, but with a constant magnetic field, it doesn't seem possible

Especially since the back of the magnet wasn't in view

You're lighting an LED with no input n.r.g, sounds pretty fishy
TANSTAAFL - for now ;)

As for the loons, ill edit all the keywords that draw them in, if everyone else does likewise we my keep the thread alive awhile longer

This type of motor is common among energy nuts they love it. It is named "magnetic motor" With powerful fixed magnets it will have torque enough to drive a small LED. So still, without laying any prestige in it. I think this video is correct. But you will need some high grade power magnets to do it. The energy output is of course not free

I still don't see how this would work. If the big magnet is strong enough to push the same poles of the small magnets, wouldn't it attract to a stop the opposite poles as they approach it?

The "demonstrations" we see on these videos are chiefly conjuring tricks, with a smattering of distorted science. The conjuring is made a whole lot easier by the fact that whoever makes a video has complete control of what we see and hear (and what we don't).

We may be right to suspect wires hidden in the lump of plasticine. That loudspeaker could have been fairly rattling away with drive from some amplifier too. Surely not, someone says - all we heard was a little whizzing noise from the motor? We heard what we were meant to hear.

So-called science comes in to its own when the audience has little knowledge of the real thing. The demonstrator shows how his wonderful invention (a crystal radio, more or less) seemed to extract a detectable amount of juice from the environment. The audience are impressed, but that's because they don't know that this sort of thing has been done since early in the last century. The demo. does not give you numbers either, so that you don't realise that the panel in the top of a garden path lamp would generate far more than their "miracle" gadget would.

Snake oil is a good description. These videos are like modern-day medicine shows.

The specific problem with the wheel of magnetism shown is magnetic circuits. With just the lid you would have a static circular field, most of the field is simply going to the neighbor, the total field forming a self contained circle. Add an external magnet and the magnetic field realigns itself into a different static stable configuration. The bar magnet that is the speaker would still have its field curve around between it's north and south, and would distort a little into the circular field. The only way that invention would work is if magnetic fields go in straight lines, which of course they don't, and can't.

The Museum of Unworkable Devices has sever similar schemes, the closest being the unbalanced wheel. It doesn't work either (big surprise). I think site was pointed to earlier in this thread, I book marked it.

set it up, walk way and the led will never, ever go out till some mechanical part breaks, sounds pretty free to me.

I could see this working since the closer magnets are at a different angle, but as bill said, magnetic fields don't go in straight lines.

To harvest energy you need to invest in the equipment and property needed to produce energy. Given that the gizmo we are discussing is working. It will never produce enough energy to to give any yield. If you purchase the parts needed to to build that thing. That is no such thing as free energy. You have such terms as renewable energy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy
But most of that kind of energy sources are powered by the sun. Which as we speak are very slowly burning out.

I am willing to bet it will not start spinning at all. I have no problem with it lighting the LED as it spins, as that is energy, but the initial spin is energy too. You are not going to get squat just putting a magnet close to that wheel.

How does it work then?
That's the point of this thread,.... it doesn't work. It's just more snake oil. You'll note that before he brings the speaker magnet into play he simply spins the disk and the LED lit. Problem is, the disk was spinning like a raped ape and he had to brake it with his hand to stop it. Disregarding friction, that disk should have come to a stop seconds after spinning it because the LED will place far more drag on the motor/gen than the inherent friction of the bearings.

Ok I have done some research (and yes I was wrong:cool:). The gizmo is a mcnutt motor. And it do not work. Here is some videos that I think is proper, or not fakes.

Well David McNutt has done a few email back and forth and I cut a rotor as per his exact dimensions. Here is the update

McNutt- how fitting
Now now, do not be to cocky now. The romours has it that Maccnut one morning slip on his bathroom floor. And hit his head in the sink. Then he woke up he had the mcnutt motor in his head (imprinted so to speak he passed out on the gully). That was for about 10 years ago. Macnutt has not become stinking rich yet. BUT that day will come. And then you will have humble pie for breakfast, lunch, dinner:eek:
