I have no direct knowledge about these particular parts but it so happens my BIL ( now retired ) was the acknowledged expert in opto couplers going way back to HP and then their follow on companies. They woul fly him all over the world to consult with different manufacturing companies. When he came back he would rant about Tesla not using proper spec parts in their cars (and rockets). The Telsa engineers always wanted what ever was cheapest. Maybe related.

A little off topic but... isn't that most auto manufacturers? I mean I can't believe all the auto guys still use steel lines for brakes. I live in the midwest and the winters are salt fest. I recently had to change my brake lines and used cupronickel lines. It's amazing stuff. Brakes shouldn't be something anyone skimps on... or doorhandles that break... or the weak bushings for hinges and all the plastic parts that just break over time....

 

Autos have become consumables. Used to be you could just keep repairing them. Not anymore. I had to scrap a Chrysler LHS because the dealers no longer had the cable for that model to connect their programmer to the ECM. Planned obsolescence.

Yeah Vanity Fair isn't my go to... unless you're talking about Kardashians and Caitlyn Jenner (I met him when he was Bruce... lol)

So what I got out of this is Musk invested $5 Bil into Solar City and it's not going well. Start ups are incredibly hard. What is the survival rate of start up, I believe it's under 50% in 4 years.

The problem with solar is the cost. Cost per kilowatt of a system that needs to produce power for 20 years while the cost of maintaining a roof (adding hundreds of pounds in panels and racking) and the offset of buying power from the grid almost makes sense now. The benefits are there. Power companies lose about 65% of the power from just transmission alone. Newest systems use micro-inverters... this allows each panel to be more efficient while down time for the full system is eliminated should one inverter go out. The cost is there to justify a system as long as you don't need to take it down and re-install it later.

I'm sure that in the future we will build houses designed for solar and systems will be designed to reduce the costs. We are still very early in the stage. Mistakes are bound to happen. 5 years ago 100 watt panel took the same amount of space as a 300 watt panel now. I'm sure things will look very different in another 5 years. The lightweight flexible panels might reduce much of the weight and installation issues.

I remember when 4K TV's were $10,000 I just bought a 55 inch for about $300.

It's amazing how they miss the target by 3% and get scolded by the market. But that's what happens when you don't have good underlying fundamentals. Tesla is doing some things right like bringing battery production in house - if they survive long enough to pull it off. They are also doing many things wrong. The inane focus on deliveries has cost them quality and -surprise!- the folks you sold a 39K Model 3 to aren't as forgiving as those who bought a 120K statement. Seems that when you increase production and sales by factors, you have to increase quality out the door and service capacity. Who knew? Well.. they didn't. Now, on reddit and TMC, where someone complaining about a problem with their Tesla would have gotten a round scolding, members are banding together to commiserate - and discuss class action lawsuits.

It's a story company and the story was previously told by Elon Musk and everyone listened. But now, some of the faithful are not so much and we'll see from there.

Me, I'll wait for the 10K.
