I suspect this is what is happening. The 10k is just a guess. Between the CPU connection and switch would either be your black / blue or black / green wire. The GND would then be your orange.

How will the CPU read the switch state here if there is a direct line from VCC to CPU?

 

What the heck? I created a NEW thread for this question, and it ended up twice at the bottom of this thread?!

 

When the switch contact is made the signal to the CPU gets shorted to ground and the CPU reads 0 volts. When the switch is open the CPU would see VCC. The 10k resistor limits the current and makes it possible.
