Barbacoa de Pozo! :) ... now THAT is real Mexican Food ... ;)
But I doubt it is actually "street food", no?

BTW we have our version (asado con cuero).
It involves the whole animal. Tried it once and still prefer plain barbecue.

Curiously when in Dakar with our schoolship Libertad, we were offered something similar that they also call "asado".

"Street food" is in the eye on the beholder.

Well, city-wise, Barbacoa ("de cabeza", "de lengua", "de cachete", or even "de ojo" .. the one I like is "de cachete") is usually made in a large pot (instead of a dug up pit), lined with Maguey's leaves (or even cactus) to preserve the moisture. There's a slight difference in taste, of course, but it's more than adequate I can tell you.

Also, Barbacoa is down here is ubiquitous. It's practically served in every single Taquería in all of Mexico.

gee... some have taken word sanitary to the next level.
like dried fried cattle fish on the beach and the drinks with ice from a dirty garbage bin.

My girlfriend is stranded at a friend's house tonight, afraid to get into the car to drive home because she might not make it. I keep telling her she can prevent most of this by avoiding street food, she agrees but this becoming an almost monthly exercise.

Edit: Bangkok is putting an end to street food. Following Singapore's example, food vendors will be moved off the streets, assigned fixed locations in specified areas and be under the supervision of health officials - a new twist. Also, I predict that this will be a golden opportunity to tax the vendors who haven't had to put up with taxes up until now. If you want (really?) to try some classic Bangkok street food, you had better get there soon.
