IO, IO it's off to sea we go. :) During 1980 :

April 15, 1980December 22, 1980Indian Ocean

This was my second full deployment on USS Eisenhower CVN 69. I was a civilian component of Department Defense as a field engineer. We were scheduled for Perth right till Iran & Iraq started their pissing contest. During the Iran hostage situation. Perth was cancelled and the State Department wanted to maintain two carrier groups in the IO at all times. Great cruise for saving money. Wow so we were both in the IO during 1980. While we were well paid the IKE appreciated me so they put me on a cruiser and that's why I got to Mombasa, Kenya for some R&R. Then back to the IKE. :)

AIMD IM3 Division that's me a long time ago. Mr Blain :)

Yes, memories of Gonzo Station. We made a Navy first. They flew beer onboard and after 100 consecutive days at sea each crew member got two beers at a steel beach bar-b-que. Had a few guys in my department who didn't drink so... that was good. Shortly we got 5 days in Singapore then back to sea for 156 consecutive days at see. Next land I saw was Norfolk VA. Pier 12. Thankfully I managed Mombasa when I got on that cruiser. We deployed with I think 27 civilians onboard. We returned to pier 12 with 5 of us who made the full deployment. The crew was 6,000 and I forget how many embarked aircraft.

On the way I did manage my shellback status and still have my card and certificate. The guys all got a kick out of me going through the initiation. Somewhere I have a box full of pictures of those days. So wow we were both there during the same period. Go figure.

While interesting to us maybe we should resume our regular scheduled programming. :) Pretty cool how our travels crossed paths. :) Looking back if I had it all to do again, I would in a heartbeat.
