A very nice composition by my friend OD, of the park at the back of my house. It's quite similar to the very first picture that I posted in this thread.

Recently, I saw this TV/Radio repair shop that looked like a landmark from days gone by. I stopped in and spoke with the owner for a while - real nice guy. Where I am standing and taking the picture from is the only free area in the shop. I could tell he had a work area in the back, but it was not accessible (to me).

How old is he? Still in business, with enough work for a living?

He was something like 65-70+ I would guess. I thought about how he could possibly make a living doing that even if he was on eBay and so on and so forth. It is possible that he lives upstairs or there is some legacy situation, I just don’t know.

On a related topic, I think it would make a really nice book for someone to tour the country tracking down these old shops. Complete with pictures and interviews. I envision a younger EEphyllic type with a History or English writing degree and a Humanities minor with a penchant for photography. Live out of your car for a year, see the country. Maybe one could even get a grant from a historical preservation society of some kind.

It’s a bit different, but there is a fellow who does this kind of thing with Horse Racing - https://www.mcchump.com/ . He visits all of these tracks, large and small, and gives a little photo essay of the visit. I enjoyed it quite a bit and, in a sense, it is preserving history.

Always thought about branded wear. I’ve been having meetings with several vendors recently regarding making my dream a reality. So, I went ahead and got this made...
Soooo what is the "brand" for. Do you sell stuff, fix stuff...... Just asking (?)

I

I design, build and sell theatrical/ entertainment sets and props. “dj’s fantasi” is currently working on a seasonal walk through attraction and animatronics.
Since you did the hat I now see it as 2 parts all these years I never got your user name. Now I get it, the first time I tried to pronounce it I was thinking, that is a very interesting username.

With the penguin still as your flagship?
Of course.

The vendors I am in contact with are to mass produce the animatronic. The torso was designed so with minimal changes - particularly the mouth and arms - different animals could be created.

Overall, the concept is to design a floor plan that can easily be changed. In that regard, the floor plan will be laid out on a hexagonal grid. Professional haunters have determined that to be the best layout. Steel frames can be bolted to the floor and theatrical muslin panels will be manufactured and painted with theatrical paint. This will form a “maze” through which the “audience” will move. This concept simplifies fire-proofing, a critical requirement in this type of attraction.

In addition to the main attraction - the maze - the entrance line will snake through scenes to establish place and time. The entrance line also provides an opportunity to sell theme-appropriate souvenirs. Increasing receipts. The entrance line will circumnavigate the exit attraction.

The exit attraction will contain several retail locations, at which the audience can purchase theme-related merchandise. As well as food and snacks.

A portion of the square footage devoted to the exit attraction will have tables for seating and eating. In my experience, this is important. Families who come to my attraction will pass through the main attraction will stop here and the older children in the family will enjoy the main attraction multiple times. These repeat admissions greatly enhance receipts.

So, my concept extends well beyond my penguin. I am creating a total family-centric experience with opportunity to upsell at every opportunity.

Thanks for asking.

Your kids must've loved watching you work... :)
Yes, they did! Over the years, they were involved in my projects. on the theatrical front, my daughter was the actress. My son was the techie!

My daughter gave me my only grandchild last year. One of my projects is an animatronic dinosaur for my grandson. The first iteration is nothing more thsn s remote controlled toy. But with microprocessor guts, it can be much more as he grows older. A neat feature in the first iteration is that when the dinosaur roars, randomly instead of a roar, it says “Papa loves Coley”

In an earlier post, I explained the etymology of my user name. I am a Disney fanatic. So instead of Disney World, I chose dj’s fantasi. (Fantasy with a ‘y’ was too mundane, so I used a ‘i’)
