When I was working in a restaurant just after high school we had a piece of equipment (a mixer, if memory serves) that was acting up. I looked at it and saw that a connector was broken. I went and mentioned that to the manager and he asked if it was the male or the female. I said it was the male. The gal that did salad prep overheard us and accused us of trying to play a joke on her (rumors of recent escapades with new employees involving flour whitener and grill stretchers may have played a role in that). The manager simply unplugged the nearest thing and pointed at the plug and said, "male", then pointed at the socket and said, "female". She got all indignant and huffed and said that there was no way that that was what they were really called. When I went up to Radio Shack and got a new plug, I also bought a couple of small things, both electrical and mechanical, that had "male" or "female" on them. I showed them to her when I got back and she was incredulous at the sexism that revealed. So I tried to explain it in a way that might make sense to her. I said something like, "Look, think about who gave it these names. Electricians, mechanics, and plumbers. So of course they chose to call the part that is free to run around and stick its prongs into anything it wants the 'male' while the part that is tied down securely and has no say at all and must accept the prongs of anything that comes at it the 'female'. What more can you expect?" Now THAT explanation she believed. BTW, it wasn't the last time the rumor list grew.
