How to make a 20 LED chaser with 4017 ?

Based on the recent thread discussing actual "light chasers", the difference is in the number of lights on at the same time. IN EVERY INSTANCE of chasers that I have seen, that has been the case.
Evidently the reference quoted in post #82 uses a different definition.

i am just trying to understand what you consider chaser. because one can connect more LEDs...

so if i understand correctly, if circuit has N outputs (channels), and only one of N lights is on, this is not a chaser. but if we connect more lights (such as 2N, 3N etc.) then 2 or 3 lights will be on at the same time and therefore now it is called a chaser?

or that is still not a chaser because only one of lights is on (out of N channels)? say if we have 8 channels but pattern is something else like 00101110 that keeps shifting/rolling, this makes it a chaser?
