Why do we get old and die?

Saw that with many of the people I grew up with who started smoking in high school to look cool or whatever. Most have given it up and it shows (for the worse) while most of us who never started show the opposite. Mid 40's and still in the better end of the fitness scale.

On gal who's about 1 - 2 years older than me has not despite having had a heart attack and one major multi bypass surgery to fix the damage from it. 4 - 5 kids plus grandkids, a all around good person and many reasons to live but she already passes for mid 50's and won't give smoking up to save her life.

Same with a few cousins of mine that are a good 10 years younger than me that smoke . I can pas for their age easier than they can and they can pass for may age easier than I do. :(
Never said smoking was good for you. But there are studies that indicate that obesity can be just as hazardous -- or even more so -- than moderate smoking.

Of course, keeping fit, avoiding processed sugar, and good overall health habits will add (hopefully healthy) years to ones life.

Unfortunately, getting hit by a bus makes all the arguments for naught.

Getting hit by a vehicle while Jogging or bicycling, take that you over achievers you would have never been hit had you been an active smoker.

One should always keep in mind he has a limited, unknowable number of days -- and enjoy each one to the fullest, whatever that entails.

And what could be better than spending your days here on AAC?

I wonder how many bikers/joggers have been hit by smokers distracted by the cherry falling in their laps while driving? See...smoking kills.

You made my day!

This year I cut out all junk food and excess sugars from my diet and so far have lost 25 - 30 pounds for it.

As of now most everyone who knows me is noticing the change and everytime I get asked if losing that much weight made me feel better, more energetic and all that health nut claims crap.

I tell them every time, No, I did not. I don't sleep near as long as well as it did. (more hours in my day was the last thing I needed.)

I am shorter tempered and restless, but still tired and am no more motivated than before most of the time. (walking up the hills on the property is easier but I could live without it. )

All summer my mouth has a bad chalky salty taste that only goes away for a few hours if and when I ate a lot of sugary desserts when out with others.

I have to wear a belt with everything now. (one more unwanted step in getting dressed I can't do without.)

Allergies do seem improved so maybe that's a legitimate plus, but not much else is standing out as being a huge life improving gain so far. :(

I have been experiencing the same sort of symptoms minus the chalky taste since I have been on my "slightly less carbs" diet. 20lbs lost but I feel underpowered. Weak and shaky. My hands shake if do anything strenuous. My legs shake if try to lift my own body weight from a squat. Even 20lbs ago it was easier. I googled my symptoms and came up with "hypoglycemic." My sister also says she's hypoglycemic. Apparently my body wants more sugar. Well damned if I do and damned if I don't.

Yep. That's it. My battery is about half charged at best most days now. Some days I am good but most just feel like I never woke up all the way. Not exactly sleepy tired but just wore out and from nothing strenuous.

A slice of toast with natural honey every morning helps but that's all I have to offer that doesn't involve eating a double batch of fudge brownies or a 1# bag of M&M's in one sitting. :(

If you eat less carbs, you need to drink more water. Carbs metabolize to make a significant amount of water. You may also be missing some salts if you work a strenuous job - the salts were supplied by the carbs. Take a potassium supplement if your hands are still shaking after you drink more water.

More-or-less the same here. Deeply low-carb, less than 10g/day, wasn't bad but my metabolism slowed down and even though I ran every day and had good endurance, I could tell it was hard to run up hills or surge in any way.

I eventually went to having a bagel with breakfast. This would allow the metabolism to get revved up for the day and it made a big difference. It was actually easier to lose weight even though I was eating much the same diet otherwise.

I'm convinced that bouncing in and out of the ketogenic zone is the superior strategy, as opposed to straight keto all the time.

FWIW, I found that things didn't taste like they needed as much salt anymore when I was in ketosis. Eating carbs made me immediately want salt.

I can't run, damn Meniscus plus Asthma. But, loosing weight was my goal this year stuck at the 180 5'9" I realized dropping the weight game me energy, I haven't had sugar in my diet since age 24 quit Smoking, candy, pop, beer, alcohol, weight lifted and practice Martial Arts until I hit 42 when I met my wife, she likes Rum Coke every night. I started socially drinking with her, then never stopped otherwise I would be more motivated to exercise so I intermittent fast 3 days a week instead, putting my body ketogenic by nothing till noon having gone 16 hrs without food is enough. When I do eat it's 3 eggs, Tapioca baguettes with Rosemary cut 1/2 by 1/2 toasted and drizzled with olive oil. Eating an Avocado is guilt free and provides a source of Fat if your cutting down.

Rather why I didn't go low/no carb thing. I eat all I want when having a get together with someone and make a point to hit the fast food places once a week just to keep my diet mixed up and normal. 6 Mcdonald's value meal cheeseburgers and a ice tea yesterday and well worth the $10 to get my weekly junk food fix!

Once the at home junkfood was cut out I got down to running about 2000 - 2500 calories a day average now, which for my build and activity levels is where the slow weight loss is coming from. All my life I have been one of those 3000 - 4000 calorie and stay even on weight types so the ~ 1000 a day less average in sugars and junk food fats is taking the weight off.

Unlike my brother it's nice to go out and eat of visit family and indulge in the high carb pasta and potato and other such dishes to my stomachs limits once every week or two! ;)

What newspaper do you read? According to statistics, life expectancy fell last year -mostly because of the opioid epidemic and diseases associated with obesity/lack of exercise.
It's not from a newspaper, it's from the Social Security Administration and that reports that people are living longer and drawing SSI longer

I wish I could do that. I can easily eat more in one meal than I can lose in two weeks. :(
That's what I get is the side effect of the no carb diets. Once you start them you're stuck for life or accept the fact you will blow up if you star eating normal of which I don't know anyone whoever did the no carb thing that didn't gain it all back plus extra once they stopped.

Not to say what I am doing doesn't have its negatives. I'd strangle a wild cat bare handed for a big bag of halloween candy right now.

I said I don't like Candy, but that doesn't mean I didn't have a Pastry or Cookie addiction, every season when the Girl Scouts sold cookies I would buy several boxes of Do si Do's

It's weird because girl scouts creep me out, like clowns to some people
