Why do we get old and die?

I think nothing because you are no longer human. What does it mean to be alive? Can life exist without death? People looking at things like life extension and uploading seem to me like fanatics with unresolved religious issues (fear of death).

It is funny to be working on augmented realities when no 2 people can agree on reality that they are living in currently Maybe a selling point will be to have people inhabit same AI!?
So we become part-robot? I’ve heard about that possibility too. I mean, if others can have robotic prosthetics then having robot parts doesn’t sound too farfetched. But I think the reason why others are exploring augmented and virtual realities, is aside from life extension, another goal is somehow preserving the earth. I f we can thrive in a simulation, then the earth cannot be further harmed anymore.

How do we know that we are not in a sim now?
Yeah… there are conspiracy theorists out there who are suggesting that we could be living in a simulation. So with technologies like VR, we could then live within a sim, within a sim? :)

Actually there is a project called Virternity that is working on creating just that – a virtual world where they say, we could achieve digital immortality. Briefly browsed their website and I’m still not sure what to make of it. Have you heard of it?

I was considering the possibility that our reality, our existence, the universe....... might possibly be one dimensional only.

It might be.....if a one dimension object can have area. Which is conceivable.

It depends on whether you believe that space can possess dimension.......or only objects can possess dimension.

What happened to the theory where we are living in a projection?

I have heard something like that....but never looked into it. Not sure what the principle would be with projection.

But I think most might grasp how a one dimensional object could express an Apparent 3D universe or reality.

This is where virtual and augmented realities come in, right? To create this 3D universe?

I guess the scientific reason behind ageing is still a mystery but there are many theories proposed. the simple reason could be that cells degenerate and become old. We do not have the power of regeneration which leads to our cells dying and us becoming old
DNA gets damaged as it replicates. It is an error prone process. There are some animals that live far longer than we do, and trees of course as well. Question I do not see being asked is how long does one want to live and why? We are having problems as it is. As "average" life span has increased, quality of life has actually dropped - people live longer but they are living sick sad lives... A pivot point was reached by western society where health is actually declining due to life style and environment in which we live.

So much wrong with this post, but, for the record, I am not having any problems. I'd like to live as long as possible -- forever even -- thank you.

You draw a bold conclusion about health vs. life style/environment.

As far as I can tell, we continue to progress toward getting Westerners as close to that 100 year brick wall as possible. That an increasing number don't make it due to suicide or fentanyl overdose does not mean we are less (physically) healthy. Psychologically, perhaps. But on that, I blame liberals.

Something about death and taxes comes to mind. I lost my dad at age 77 to Pancreatic Cancer. He led a healthy life, non smoker right till then and no history of it. My mom went to 92 and was healthy right till her dying day, never any dementia or health issues. She died of a ruptured aortic aneurysm.

I have no clue when I will check out but I also don't believe in tempting fate. Right now I am very much enjoying retirement and watching my grand children grow. I do not see the drop in quality of life you mention? I see life as being what we make it and the quality of my life to date has gone just fine. If I die tomorrow people will likely remember more how I lived which is fine with me. I always liked the phrase:

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” — Hunter S. Thompson

So far life for me has been an "E" Ticket ride and I am good with that.

Genetics, Pollution, Air, Water, Earth, A work environment of chemicals or etc. Contact exposure with many chemicals known and unknown, Ingested Minerals incidentally etc.

If you look at Genetics, many Men in my Family dated back to the 16th century live well past 70, dying of a problem they called Lung Hardening. My Dad 89 dying of a chronic illness we call COPD, back then they didn't have a name for it.

It's something I think about often, but he had several ladies he said were his friends, out living my Mother, as well as my Stepmother ( Hepatitis C ) contracted from a visit to the hospital and a blood infusion for reasons I have no idea during this time they had no knowledge of it. She died at 73 born in 1933, my Dad was born in 1927. My Father was a Strong Man all the way to the end, he was diagnosed a month earlier COPD, he was able to live past Christmas, 11 days after his 89th Birthday.

I have progressive Asthma which is not a normal form of Asthma, it's called work related Asthma where the lung doesn't not stay soft but rather hardens, the only relief I have is Breo, which relaxes the lungs. However, back in the day, the only thing that helped the lungs was Alcohol, but didn't last as long as my treatment, 24 hrs. I can only imagine they drank all day a little at a time.

So, living a life as long as one can, with the aspect of trying to maintain as normal as possible, I too @Reloadron enjoy my Grandchildren, time spent with them is worth any defects I have, once that fulfillment of life is gone I hope to pass quickly. Like my Father and Mother and BTW, my Mother at 65 passed very quickly while putting on a shoe to walk with my Father, less than 6 minutes after her heart attack.
