Greenwood is scheduled for sentencing on July 21 with Chief U.S. District Judge David G. Estudillo. He faces up to 20 years in prison, but prosecutors have recommended the low end of the sentencing guidelines, because Greenwood has been in intensive drug treatment since his arrest, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Two men have pleaded guilty to vandalizing power substations in Washington state in attacks that left thousands without power on Christmas Day.
Jeremy Crahan, of Puyallup, admitted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma that he and Matthew Greenwood conspired to cut electrical power in order to break into ATM machines and businesses and steal money, Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman said in a news release.
The presiding Chief U.S. District Judge David Estudillo said the crime was very serious but also recognized that Greenwood had made great progress since his arrest.
Greenwood reportedly made great progress on pretrial release, having completed inpatient drug treatment and maintaining his sobriety.
Prosecutors and U.S. Probation recommended a probationary sentence so that Greenwood could continue his progress toward a drug-free and law-abiding life.
Co-defendant Crahan was not successful in drug treatment and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
According to Greenwood’s plea agreement, Crahan and Greenwood planned the scheme to disrupt power so they could break into ATMs and businesses and steal money.
Good guess.I think we are jumping to conclusions about the perpetrator. Terrorist groups tend to take credit for their attacks. I am guessing dumbass on this one.
