I ran across this series of tutorials by Mike Silva which may help a bit; it seems well-written, covers a lot of ground, and it starts at the very beginning.

I've printed out and bound the 14 chapters of Mike Silva's tutorials. Will use them as lessons and a reference.

Not necessary. But what you do need is a good soldering iron/workstation. At the very least of the type that allows temperature control. Also, get yourself a good set of tweezers.

well its ok I have got this thing which enables me to see well enough I think. with good light. for example i can see the colour codes of the small legged resistors

Nah... a good adjustable swing arm desk lamp should suffice. I have one with a magnifier that I use a lot.
