Hi,

I have a doubt on selection of oscillators and crystals for a design..apart from costing,

1. What makes crystal or oscillator to be specifically chosen.
2. what Decides square wave or sine wave to be used in a Design.
3. what if i use square wave instead of sine wave which is recommended by Datasheet.

1. Crystals are inexpensive means of achieving frequency accuracy and stability.

2. The choice depends upon the function of the design.

3. Depending upon the application you are likely to have undesired harmonics or other malfunction.

2. To cover the general case would literally require a book. If you describe your application one of more of us can give you and idea of the consequences.

3. A pure sine wave is composed of a single frequency. A square wave is composed of the fundamental frequency plus a series of odd harmonics of the fundamental frequency.
