My compressor --- At 120VAC, 3.25 Amperes count as 1 horsepower (or dogpower?) for the f*%$#n chinese.
Can't blame the Chinese for this one, as this specsmanship game far predates the Chinese flooding our markets with fraudulent crap. Even back in high school the compressors you saw at hardware stores had ridiculous claims on them. The most absurd one I ever saw (though worse existed) was a Campbell Hausfeld compressor, run off of a 115 VAC, 15 A residential circuit, that proudly claimed across the tank 8 HP. If you bent over and looked at the nameplate on the motor, you saw that it was a 3/4 HP motor. I paid attention because my dad worked his entire career for an air compressor manufacturer/distributor.

This was known as "marketing horsepower" (a double entendre, to my way of thinking) and, like the "peak music power" that was thrown about in audio equipment, relied on meaningless and utterly contrived measurement scenarios.

HP = (V*A*(%Efficiency))/746Watts
So (120*13*.8)/746 = 1.67HP @ 80% efficiency which is about standard for 120VAC
Yeah, it's a wee bit stretched to get to 4HP... But hey, in china they go by the "if you can, CHEAT" admonition even in advertising!

In fact, even today, I saw an article from china where they have discovered and developed a substitute for copper wire that is even better and almost free... Hope it works out better for them than their concrete...
