Can't blame the Chinese for this one, as this specsmanship game far predates the Chinese flooding our markets with fraudulent crap. Even back in high school the compressors you saw at hardware stores had ridiculous claims on them. The most absurd one I ever saw (though worse existed) was a Campbell Hausfeld compressor, run off of a 115 VAC, 15 A residential circuit, that proudly claimed across the tank 8 HP. If you bent over and looked at the nameplate on the motor, you saw that it was a 3/4 HP motor. I paid attention because my dad worked his entire career for an air compressor manufacturer/distributor.View attachment 369664
My compressor --- At 120VAC, 3.25 Amperes count as 1 horsepower (or dogpower?) for the f*%$#n chinese.
This was known as "marketing horsepower" (a double entendre, to my way of thinking) and, like the "peak music power" that was thrown about in audio equipment, relied on meaningless and utterly contrived measurement scenarios.
