Mandatory USB C Charge Ports Now In Effect In The UK

Apparently now the USB C charge port standard is mandatory in the UK.
Whay type of standard?
Is the C port the one you cable your device to, so it's the power source port? Or is this standard applied to all rechargeable batt devices like flashlights, fans, razors, mini blenders, and mobile phones?

Doesn't make sense to me that the std would be for devices.

Geez oh grief. You guys are beyond belief.

The advantages of USB C PD are clear to anybody who understands the spec and reason for its implementation.
It's sort of poking fun at the standards that come out from time to time.
PD is decent but the standards change and that messes things up sometimes. For example, one of my wall warts (expensive BTW) does not put out any real voltage until it it told to do that by a device plugged into it. So now I have some devices that do not work with that (expensive) wall wart because they don't know about that.
It's a good idea, but it's a little too strict.

What do you mean what side?

The USB C connector on a typical cell phone. Most are an input that takes in the charging power but recently they started allowing the cell phones to be able to charge other cell phones so the C connector can output power too in those phones.

The reason for making the C connector a standard was to reduce electronic waste. Many people get a new cell phone every two years, and if they need a wall wart that is special then they throw out the old one.
What does not make sense to you?

Many power sources for devices are going with the more robust USB-C port. Devices can be whatever.

So what does the UK std apply to? My guess is it's the power source. This means devices sold into UK market should typically come with a cable that can connect the device to the USB-C power source port. Some device makes bundle USB-A with a A-to-C adapter for best travel and vehicle flexibility. The world is slow to adopt C as power source std.

Well if you put a USB C port on a cell phone you have to charge it with a USB C cord/charger. I don't know if they also want the standard for wall warts also. I know it is for cell phones because Apple has to pull some of theirs off the shelves now. They don't mention wall warts being pulled though.

I plug in many of my C devices into my USB-A wall warts. Some devices don't use features of the C standard. And, devices that support all the features of C can still be plugged into non-C chargers, you just won't get the robust charging that C source can provide (depending on C spec it is). And to boot, there is no requirement that a C port source be at a certain level of C spec. You can have a C port source that won't go to highest voltage and watts that a device can use. There's C port (physical port) and then there's USB C spec. Specs vary.

It's under environmental legislation (in order to prevent waste).
It's law in the EU from 28th December 2024, but the UK is still consulting on it:

I know there are C ports and C standards, no problem with that.

OK, I read it.

Things in the UK are gonna get way more expensive. Adding in a C spec (port and protocols) to low end devices that have rechargeable batt is a major to-do. As example, a clip-on LED laptop reading light, under the UK rule that low end item would need to support the C spec the EU mandates. Such low-end LED light does not need all the extra protocol stuff of C spec.

As for why app-ill pulled phones, makes no sense to me, the lightning port is C spec compatible.

I think that EU rule means to mandate that both sides support a stated C-spec as minimum, and not sure why they would mandate a physical port.

I don't see anywhere in tha EU mandate doc where is mentions device-to-device electrical transfer. It's written to address efficiency in power sources ("chargers").

The other issue with such mandate, they will mandate some USB-C spec as "minimum", and then in near future something better comes along that saves power and can be done in USB-C port, will the EU update the mandate over and over again? If they don't then you'll be back in the boat named "November 2024". The only way to keep up is to do what it done with AC freons, you sunset one for something better and allow the market 1-5yrs to comply.

A clip-on LED reader light needs no data transfer, nor does it need 48v fast charging. To implement a C spec on such LED light makes no sense, and to mandate it means the LED light got more complicated and more expensive. Spend an extra 5 on light to save 2 on power waste. So in essence, consumer pays more for the power folks to make more money.

What's next, a PWM mandate so that every device is void from power wasting resistors for light dimming?

EU would be better served by developing an efficency standard for the various categories of BoT's (batteries of things). This way who cares about C vs A vs eV chargers.

If the charger to batt is 92% efficient, then it does not matter if it was via A port or C port or Lightning port.

Connecting devices together like app-ill to app-ill for power sharing, makes no difference in grand scheme of power efficiency, and nobody cares if the Android C device cannot power share with the App-ill Lightning device.

Just seems like those EU folks are trying to fortofy job security by writing non-sensical stuff.

And for the eco folks, attempting to squeeze out another 1-3% efficiency from grid to devices, is meaningless when you look at the much bigger problem of energy demand vs capacity of the grid. The grid cannot support demand, and there's not enough source to supply the demand.

You are right about the efficiency standards, and to bring the point full circle, the wall warts are being made to put out nearly 0 watts when not being used, but the wireless chargers are wasting more energy than they were before the change. Very strange. Add a new arm to improve picking things up, then cut a different one off, that's strange.

But why do you have a problem with the USB C port standard? It's to reduce electronic waste. What's wrong with that?
