For this datasheet (https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&...0ILgBg&usg=AFQjCNH_NQVIH28Y9JzlMPwocxlwrJrnNw) I was trying to set up the circuit shown on pg12.

In the pinout section it shows pin 3 as the 'ouput', but in the circuit diagram it shows pin 3 connected straight to ground and pin 2 as the 'output'. Which one do I go off!?

 

Pin 3 is consistently shown as a ground pin, including page 12. I think you read this wrong.

But on page 3 it is shown with the label "output" next to it.

 

The 16 pin DIP package uses pin 3 for the output and the 24 pin SOIC doesn't use pin 3 at all. Just use the pinout for the package you have.
