Inverter circuit (power stage problem)

A power mosfet (in my case irf540) can act both as :
1) a switch- by manipulating Vgs(gate voltage) to be less than or equal to vth(threshold voltage)
2) current amplifier - if DC basing is supplied at Vds(drain-source Voltage) and Vgs is greater than vth. Id(drain current) increases

my question is, If I have multiple mosfets, could I connect them in such a way as to act as both a switch and an amplifier. So that after I filer the signal and send it to a transformer, they will not overheat?

On my first attempt my mistake was to use a circuit design that used the mosfet as both a switch and an amplifier as the same time
