The Miami Herald reported that locals said the centuries-old boulders, known as "hunger stones," reappeared last week as rivers in Europe ran dry due to drought conditions.

One such stone is on the banks of the Elbe River, which begins in the Czech Republic and flows through Germany.

The boulder dates back to 1616 and is etched with a warning in German: "Wenn du mich seehst, dann weine" – "If you see me, then weep," according to a Google translation of the phrase.

Edward Abbey wrote a couple great descriptions of flash floods in his various books. Sorry I can’t remember the details. But one that I do remember was from Desert Solitaire where the hiker was presented with an oncoming river from a storm somewhere up the canon.

Water coming with some noise and he first noticed the ants running away. The quote I remember was “generations of ant empires swept away” as the flood came through.

As far as jeepers getting in trouble? I am not sympathetic. They have been lured by TV ads about “adventure” with no understanding about risk. I have no problem with them drowning.

Joni Mitchel called it right in Big Yellow Taxi when she sings "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot". When you allow an area to be overbuilt and paved you can expect problems.

The hunger stones were carved in the 16th and 17th century and in order to carve (chisel) them they had to be exposed. They are appeared several times about every 100 years. I guess global warming was a problem back then too.

Planned power shutoffs to prevent wildfires underway in Oregon
Strong, gusting winds and low humidity will cause extreme fire danger across western Oregon and Washington this weekend as authorities encouraged residents to charge cellphones and have an evacuation plan ready.

Starting Friday, a dry east wind with gusts of up to 50 mph will be accompanied by low humidity, setting up a situation ripe for fire danger, the National Weather Service said.
