Opamp needs positive as well as negative supply.
eg. 8 pin DIP 741 IC

There are several methods to get around the necessity of a negative supply with op-amps. Posting your schematic would help a lot.

 

The Linear Technoloogy IC that OBW0549 suggested uses a flying capacitor to move battery voltage to below ground. This one uses a flying battery instead.
