There is an excellent movie, called "White Dog" that was actually banned in the states (made in 1982 and not released until 2008). It deals with the topic you brought up.

My nieces 8yr old daughter just yesterday was mauled by the neighbor's dog (Akita) at the cottage, Evidently it is 'good' with people but not other dogs! , he tried to get through the fence to my nieces dog and somehow her daughter ended up being mauled on the back.

That is absolutely horrifying for anyone let alone a child. I will never own a dog which does not have good social skills not just with other dogs but with people.

Oh geeze sorry to hear that.

What i always like to say is that animals will always be somewhat unpredictable so you have to always be aware of that.
The animal 'experts' all say they know their animals, yet many of them get attacked due to reasons they never thought possible.
Best and worst example at the same time is Steve Irwin. Terrible. He swore that could never happen but in a novel situation, it did.
I also found out about a shark 'expert' who knew 'everything' about sharks especially a certain species. Well, one day he was wading in water with those sharks swimming around believing they would never attack him, but then he got attacked. Again it was a novel situation where the sharks went into a feeding frenzy and apparently MISTAKED his leg for the food. One of them bit off most of his calf on one leg.

So it seems that novel situations bring up novel behaviors. Same with self driving cars

The problem with a dog going "out of control", boils down in my opinion to this: going through all layers of training, social manners, environment or whatever, one day, an unexpected impulse resets it to the factory settings

It was food from their point of view.

And I firmly believe that some dog breeds are more likely to be reset to those settings than others.
And it has little to do with training or how they were raised.

Akita is a very difficult dog breed that needs a lot of socialization. There is a disturbing trend I see, people get dogs and let them roam in a fenced yard. As long as they feed the dogs, and dogs have the space they "own", the owners are more or less fine, but these dogs are mentally unstable. A pair of such dogs lives around the corner. They are psychotic. Never walked. I feel terrible for them.

Yeah this pit pull surprised me that it was so meek and mild and seemingly afraid of it's own shadow. I think i mentioned it before but one time i went to feed him and i banged the can of food on the dish on the floor to try to get the food out of the can and it made a loud bang and he jumped back.
This is partly why i would hate to see anything bad happen to that dog he's a gentle soul. He also loves company he hates to be alone. Leave him alone in a room and he cries he wants to be with the humans.

So i have no explanation why some dogs are so nasty but others are so meek and mild. Maybe there just is none or it is a complex mixture of heredity, upbringing, food, climate, etc.

 

Maybe in general that is true but the funny thing about this dog is he is very meek otherwise. If you make a noise he will jump. I think because he was mistreated in the past.

You should make a demonstration to show how timid this dog is. While the dog is sleeping, send a child running into the room and grab the dog's dish. If the kid gets out alive, you can call the pitbull, timid.

He didnt seem to have any problem with touching his food or anything like that. Dont know about a small child though he might mistake it for another chew toy. That was the theory behind why he 'attacked' two small dogs in the past.

A Texas man was arrested after his seven dogs mauled a 71-year-old man to death while walking to a neighborhood store last week, authorities said.
The victim, identified as Freddy Garcia, was walking to the store around 1:30 p.m. on July 18 when he was attacked by the seven dogs in the city of Fresno, just south of Houston--
Four of the dogs were captured after the attack and the three remaining were later captured by animal control. All seven dogs were a pit bull mix.

In a word, "Yikes".

Best to read up on how to fight off dogs i guess. I read up on that some years ago but not recently.
A friend says to step on their foot because their feet are weak. The pit bull has some big paws, so i wonder if it would work with that breed.

I'm talking about the words you used to described the dog in your first post...

...once he knows you (takes about 2 minutes for the introduction) he is like a good old friend and very afraid of anything that goes bump in the night. So he's rather meek even though he barks up a storm with strangers

It's your story, not mine. I'm the one not understanding how you can say it's a meek and friendly dog that attacks other dogs. Read your first post.
