The general rumour during WW2 was saying it was done to confuse the Germans.!

It was actually done to reduce electricity consumption and improve WW2 productivity.

I greatly enjoy living in places that don't change their clocks. When finding my way around a strange place in the North I often intuitively take into account the position of the sun and time of day, but shifting the clocks throws a wrench into that process.

Do any countries in the tropics do this?

Until recently, my state of Indiana did not change. We fought it for a long time but our governor finally pushed it through with the excuse it would make us more like the east coast for business reasons. It doesn't seem to have done anything except inconvenience people.

 

Here in Massachusetts, there is a push to stay on daylight time all year. In the winter, it is fully dark here at 4:30. According to our longitude , we should be on Atlantic time, which is tjhe same as Eastern daylight time, so that makes sense.

 

When living in ME not only did it get dark ~3 the sun didn't rise until 10. The only time we saw the sun was during the lunch break. So there was no good solution. You lost both ways. Now living in GA it is the opposite. There is no way to win with the US time zones spanning such Latitudes. In the Redmond MS office, there is a group that are dedicated to time problems colloquially known as the "Lords of Time" whose sole responsibility is dealing with software time issues.

 

We never used daylight saving time in the Caribbean.
Many countries in Africa do not use DST.

The 3 west coast states have voted to opt out, but they need Federal approval to do it.

Get it approved soon, BC is waiting for you. Once you abolish it, BC will as well. This of course proves that Canada is a slave of the US, we can easily do it now as it is provincial matter, but they will not due to complications it will cause to trade with western states. Help us!
