Saving a dead variac

I have a pretty old variac. It blew a fuse so I opened it up and about 1/4 of the winding looks burnt. So I assume there's a short in there. Is there any way to repair this or is it scrap?

Likely overloaded. Pretty easy to rebuild if the wiring is fried just at the pickup surfaces and the coil form is still intact.
