The Coastal GA county I live in has had 4 cases with 1 fatality out of a population of ~14k (at least that is the "Official Count"). Even with having the I-95 corridor running through it (not much here to stop for). Lots of retirees and most of the kids move to the big city for jobs after school/military/college/etc. Lots more infected/deaths in the counties surrounding us. So far been lucky that no one we know has been stricken, even among our many friends and relatives spread across the world. Not sure where my Boston relatives are but sure they left Boston for their Condo in Vero Beach or their ranch in Montana instead of staying in the hot spot.

If it is war then the best we can expect is to win this battle with acceptable losses. We can't win the war and can't stay at a war footing for long periods of time without destroying what we want to save.
I agree. In an earlier post I mentioned that a study should be made on the cost of lives of not reopening the economy vs reopening it. But I emphasize that the cost should be evaluated on the amount of lives, not on the amount of money.

CS Lewis is awesome -- especially his political writings.

But you didn't have to be so condescending as to provide definitions.
Oh it was not meant to be condescending it was meant to make it easier and faster to read and understand for those that were not familiar with those rather uncommon words.
It's only condescending if you take it that way. You cant please everyone :)

Where do you live? Boston has the third most deaths in the country, after NY and NJ.
Cleveland and geography plays into it. I wasn't aware Boston had that many cases. Like any city, we have confirmed cases and deaths, I just haven't known any directly. Immediate family is a hundred miles south in the Columbus, OH area. Thinking about it and memories of Boston they like NYC have a large and busy mass transit network. Mass transit has to be great for spreading a virus.

Just found out I lost two more family members (gf family, actually). A dad and his 30-something son.

That’s EIGHT! Please, no one tell me this isn’t serious.

Neither was elderly nor did they have any existing health conditions.
Oh wow very sorry to hear that. My condolences.
I know that is one of the worst things in life. I know people that if i lost them it would be totally devastating for me.

A Universal Basic Income experiment.

$600 per week.

That's what the federal government is now offering to people who've lost their jobs because of the coronavirus.

For many workers and employers, that money is a godsend — a way to keep food on the table while also cutting payroll costs.

But the extra money can create some awkward situations. Some businesses that want to keep their doors open say it's hard to do so when employees can make more money by staying home.

But as of this week, that same employee receives $1,016 a week, or $376 more than he made as a full time employee. Why on earth would he want to come back to work?

This has had the perverse effect of making it impossible for us to hire enough people even for our limited takeout and delivery business at a time of rapidly rising unemployment. It will be an even bigger problem once we are allowed to reopen our dining rooms. And it will persist at least until July 31, when the unemployment bonus expires. I’d have to offer my cooks $25.40 an hour to match what the government is paying them not to work.

If the viruses held board meetings about how best to infect the most people in the shortest amount of time, that would be the thing they would always bring up first :)

Yikes that is May, June, and July with no business. That's just plain nuts.
This is the time when they have to start seriously looking at pros and cons and weighing them according to what they really are.

I am borderline 65 but i'll take the risk just to see the country open up and thrive again.

As has been previously observed by Cooper et al. (1983), adding a layer of nylon stocking over the masks minimized the flow of air around the edges of the masks and improved particle filtration efficiency for all masks, including all commercial products tested. Use of a nylon stocking overlayer brought the particle filtration efficiency for five of the ten fabric masks above the 3M surgical mask baseline.

Upon close examination, shed wearing it over the mask.
Hmmm... Then it's not working very well. Much worse than I would have expected. When I wore one of those masks pulverizing coal samples they would always leave coal tracks around my nose where they were leaking air in. They are a "cheap throw-away" substitute for a real respirator. Caveat Emptor

I have seen pictures of masks made from bra cups. My niece has one with small penis' all over it. The idea is if they say "Hey your mask has penis' on it" they are too close to her. One wild and crazy Psychiatrist babe.

This is not meant to gross anyone out. On my weekly shopping trip the Cleveland, I stopped in the appropriate section of a local Marc's supermarket and was browsing pads. They are cheap, very fine mesh, and soft. My idea was to simply punch two holes. Loop rubber bands through the holes to attach around my ears, and cut off any unnecessary material, like this:

Well, I started getting the weirdest looks from masked women and stocking clerks, so I gave up on the idea. Guess I am too worried about my image in the community. But for someone else, maybe a cheap solution.
