Coronavirus Lockdown Reduces Earth’s Seismic Vibrations

According to data observations in Belgium, the seismic noise has been reduced by one-third since the coronavirus lockdown.

Geoscientists state that the drop in the seismic noise is usually witnessed during the seasonal holidays like Christmas. For instance, the infrasound frequencies (1-20 Hz) of ground movement, mainly due to the human activities, have witnessed a sharp reduction by 30-50 per cent in Brussel since mid-March due to the lockdown.

Geologists have also observed similar trends of a drop in seismic vibrations in Paris, London, Los Angeles, and Aukland due to ongoing lockdown.

According to reports, the reduction in the vibration is also crucial for Geoscientists who examine naturally occurring sounds from crashing ocean waves to study Earth’s crust.
