Pardon me for sounding like a conspiracy theorist, but maybe the Covid-19 virus is actually a bio weapon that was accidentally released in Wuhan and it's now propagating out of control. For the past year,

Also, China has been have trouble with Hong Kong and it has sent in 1000s of police to use force against the protesters. China is a very dangerous government and it's a sure bet that it has WMDs ready to use against any military and civilian targets that might be in its way.

It's being reverse engineered but as a bio-weapon it would be pretty weak sauce.

I think I said this same thing when this thread first started and was greeted with disbelief. How could a Country do this to it's own people....……...Practice makes perfect. If Hong Kong doesn't want to settle down and fall in line (?)

Just kill them off...……..No problem anymore.

IMO people vastly overestimate the intelligence and creativity of our far East "friends". While I doubt the hard core conspiracy where the Chinese invented and released the virus, they are no doubt incompetent enough to release it accidentally. China's primary contribution to humanity is, and always will be, cheap labor.

The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 didn't start in Spain either. This one did start in china but is the same strain that was stolen from a research lab in NC that studies coronavirus in bat populations a while back. Of course, if you ask Iran it's from the CIA since it could never have come from their chinese allies.

Could you please post a link to a reputable source documenting this claim that the current corona virus was stolen from this lab by the Chinese? Otherwise there's no reason to believe it is anything more than the usual conspiracy-theory rumor mill at work (of which there are many hundreds).

Why would the Chinese steal a virus in NC that's indigenous to Asia? They told use 40 years ago to stay away from and don't eat those fruit bats flying in the jungles. They ate some sort of fruit that carried a neurotoxin and other nasty critters the locals could tolerate but not us.

There you go starting with that "reputable" thing and I suppose next you will expect credible. Well I overheard a guy talking beside a drinking fountain and he knew a guy who knew somebody who had first hand highly classified information. That's my source.

Oh sure, now just start asking questions. Actually a good question but nonetheless questions which are good will not be entertained or even considered.

Thank You

There was a recent article about 2 US research laboratories one at UNC and the other in NY? The lead doctor of the NC lab has been studying coronavirus in bat populations for over 30 years. The article was about how they had received samples from the CDC and had ramped up work on them and bringing in more personnel. However, due to containment restraints, researchers are only able to work within the ultra containment labs for 1-4 hours at a time. Multilayered protection, on battery-powered ultrafiltered positive pressure air supply respirators, decontaminated before removing each layer of protection and working extremely long hours per person with the lab operating non-stop. As a footnote of the article was a comment about the UNC lab having samples stolen from it not long ago "by the chinese" matching the current viral strain. It was assumed the chinese theft was "for one of their research facilities to weaponize it". Take it for what it's worth. Hearsay? Unsubstantiated rumor? Something to be covered up for security purposes? Credible? Not surprising? Who knows for sure... The chinese are now saying that it did not start in china. How credible is that? Bottom line is it is here and it is a big problem.

Nothing about "by the chinese" or "chinese theft " or "weaponize it". A total BS rumor.

The virus originated in bats and is thought to have passed through palm civets on its way to people. By 2012, a deadly pathogen from camels, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), began killing people in the region. Eventually, more than 850 died.
In 2015, Baric and his colleagues were able to show that SARS-like viruses in Chinese horseshoe bats posed a particular threat to cause a new outbreak. The virus spike in the bat coronavirus was unusually adaptable, allowing it to recognize receptors in multiple species, including human lung cells.

As for the general notion that the virus has been bioengineered, there’s no evidence that’s true. On the contrary, as we’ve explained before, all lines of evidence point to the virus coming from an animal. That’s consistent with what scientists have learned about the ecology of coronaviruses in the last 20 years, Sheahan said, including SARS and MERS — and it fits with the fact that the virus shares 96% of its genome with a bat virus.

“The genetic data is pointing to this virus coming from a bat reservoir,” he said, “not a lab.”

And not only are there no HIV “insertions” in the virus, but by looking at the virus’ genome, scientists also see zero signs of human tampering.

Bedford, the Fred Hutchinson computational biologist, pointed out on Twitter that the virus’ genetic differences to its most recent common ancestor are “consistent with differences expected to arise during natural evolution.”

An engineered virus, he explained, would likely have a “distorted” amino acid to nucleotide ratio, and also have changes focused in on a “subset of genes.” In other words, when engineering occurs, it’s usually to bring about a meaningful change to the virus — but there’s no evidence of that in the 2019-nCoV genome.

Oh and it's not from eating bats, it's from eating pangolins that feed on bats. Similar to SARS which came from eating civet cats which also feed on bats. Also from china.

This is the article, however, the comments attached to the article are missing... Within those comments was the cite to the theft and the speculation as to it being weaponized. Not that a weaponized version was released but that the current virus was a very close match if not identical to what was stolen.
Comments from some random person most likely not attributed to the lab or any other sane organisation.

Let's all make a deal here, conspiracy theories are not allowed.

Background: The COVID-19 outbreak containment strategies in China based on non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) appear to be effective.
...
Without NPIs, the number of COVID-19 cases would likely have shown a 67-fold increase (IQR: 44 - 94), with the effectiveness of different interventions varying. The early detection and isolation of cases was estimated to prevent more infections than travel restrictions and contact reductions, but integrated NPIs would achieve the strongest and most rapid effect. If NPIs could have been conducted one week, two weeks, or three weeks earlier in China, cases could have been reduced by 66%, 86%, and 95%, respectively, together with significantly reducing the number of affected areas. However, if NPIs were conducted one week, two weeks, or three weeks later, the number of cases could have shown a 3-fold, 7-fold, and 18-fold increase across China, respectively. Results also suggest that the social distancing intervention should be continued for the next few months in China to prevent case numbers increasing again after travel restrictions were lifted on February 17, 2020. Conclusion: The NPIs deployed in China appear to be effectively containing the COVID-19 outbreak, but the efficacy of the different interventions varied, with the early case detection and contact reduction being the most effective. Moreover, deploying the NPIs early is also important to prevent further spread. Early and integrated NPI strategies should be prepared, adopted and adjusted to minimize health, social and economic impacts in affected regions around the World.
