Hello!

I am planning to build a robotic arm (5 or 6 dof) with NEMA 17 stepper motors which I want to be closed loop.

The budget is up to 30$ per closed loop stepper motor (motor + driver + encoder). In addition I will need a motherboard to control them. What option are there?

I think your budget is more than a bit optimistic. You have not really defined any requirements that the system needs to meet. Do you even know what the requirements are with respect to response time, position error, velocity error, acceleration and braking. Do you have a plan for avoiding electrical and mechanical resonances? Those requirements will dictate the component selection as well as the required power supply which might be the most expensive part of this project.

Robotic CNC tends to be a little more demanding than machining CNC system, the multi-axis interpolation is necessary.
For DIY CNC I have always tended to use Galil motion cards, but a little pricey, bet a very professional job can be obtained.
