125 Mhz Butler oscillator - amplitude limiting diodes necessary?

Hi, if you look at the two different schematics below, the example from Robert J Matthys 'Crystal oscillator circuits' has diodes across the inductor to limit the amplitude of the signal to prevent over driving the crystal beyond its maximum power. The other example doesn't. Is this due to different biasing? I am trying to build a VHF receiver with SA636 and am wondering if I need to account for these diodes in my design, considering the internal biasing of the IC's emitter follower. See final picture. Any advice on my schematic would be greatly appreciated, I'm trying to account for all the components I might need on my prototype board before I send the design off to be made.

Thanks
