Evidently it was based on a real hotel owner, when the Monty Python crew would go down to the south coast to shoot, they stayed at a hotel where the owner was a actual Basil Fawlty type, and the show evolved from there.
Max.
Can you imagine staying in a hotel like that??? "Oh you're GERMAN....I thought there was something wrong with you" apparently the Germans also find it funny and were not "offended" at all.
"sp,,,,,oooooons"! (Bernerd Cribbins, the hotel inspector)

And why not?
Every race has certain characteristics that can be exaggerated in the name of humour, and can generally laugh at themselves, but NO, now every thing has to be 'Politically' correct.
You mustn't say that because it may offend someone, it seems to be running rampant.

One example is the banning on the air waves on some stations of the movie 'The Party' with the late Peter Sellers, I see Raj is still here, I would ask him if he saw it, was it in any way offensive to someone of Indian descent?
Max.

(In the words of Manuel, (Fawlty towers) "I know nothing")
But I learn Mr Fawlty!

I thought Peter Sellers was brilliant in that film, he had all the characteristics off to a T, Birdy, birdy num num's, and the pool table, "what is the purpose of the balls strategically placed upon the table"?

I worked at a company around 1966 that had some Sikh engineers who were mostly related, the leader was Papa Rahal and his cousins, Really nice guys and very clever. One lunchtime, I was reading a magazine called "Motorboat and Yachting" Rahal's cousins came over and politely asked "what is this motorboat and yatch--ting, I said no, it's pronounced yotting. No NO they all said, YATCH--ting, then spent the next hour trying to prove me wrong lol.

Sorry. I haven't watched it. So I have no idea about it. But speaking about offending others, it can be well taken until its humorous; without intentions to degrade others. I don't mind if its on my country or my culture or even myself if it involves healthy humour. One's ignorance/foolishness is some other's fun. Thats what is the base of any comedy/humour. Charlie chaplin is a best example.

ps, Fawlty Towers was just on at my house an hour ago, so I tried to appreciate it.:)
I failed.:(

Too much unnecessary commotion, slap-stick comedy, and repetition to suit me.
"Yeah, right, OK, I can name that script in three notes." Then they play the same scene six or eight times. Move it along already! John Cleese has a lot of skills, and I think one of them is the ability to make a 2 page script last for 30 minutes.

F.T. was on right after, "As Time Goes By" which is the opposite of commotion, but I don't like that one, either. The woman is constantly occupied with what might be the motive of somebody else...only to find that the other guy wasn't aware, didn't have any motives, and the entire Tempest in a Teapot played out in her head while he didn't have a clue. C'mon guys. You need more than one story line to put a Season in the box.

I don't hate all British TV. Red Dwarf was absurd enough to tickle my funny bone, but I walk out on most of them because folding laundry is more interesting and the plot of taking out the trash moves more quickly.

Well, @#12, there may be no hope for you but if you ever feel like giving it one more chance, watch my favorite episode of FT. I think you need to be in the right mood and not expecting a lot, but this one made a permanent impression on me. (Sorry it's in 3 parts. That's the best free version I could find. )
