It is because of the way they are constructed. A non polarized capacitor is constructed from metal plates (any shape - square round, rectangular) with a solid dielectric material between them. The solid dielectric material between the plates has no polarity associated with it. In an electrolytic capacitor it is an oxide layer and the polarized electrolyte that makes the distinction. They will explode if you place enough reverse voltage on them. It creates heat and pressure.
