Today... Repaired my MiniDisc MDS-JE510 deck. Shimmed a sensing microswitch and replaced a broken plastic gear plastic shaft with a metal screw; and guessed right after hours of trying how the synchronization of loading gears had to be. Works. Playing The Hollies loud now. Happy.

Next in line is to replace the dial backlights in the receiver.

And today, Monday, not a repair, but an emergency call from a pottery studio operator. She had just had a large kiln installed and she was not convinced that the installing electrician had done the three-phase hookup correctly. Could I please inspect it and verify if it was correct.
So did. I first noticed, before even entering, was that the building did not have three phase power coming to the meter box from the pole. only two insulated wires plus a grounded neutral. That was a serious clue. Inside, the new breaker panel had only two double pole breakers, 70 amps each. IT WAS a LARGE kiln. I inspected the kiln wiring, it was correct for 240 volts split phase, which we have in this area. No three phase any where. I explained that there was no three phase, but that the kiln could have been connected for three phase previously.

Swamp Cooler stopped blowing, opened it up to find the Belt off and the pulley destroyed. It was slowing down and I didn’t check it, the belt must have loosen enough to slip and sanded away at the pulley.

Replaced pulley and belt. Works Great

Replaced the drive belt on a Siemens iQ700 tumble dryer.
This is quite an involved procedure. You have to remove the rear bearing in order to get the new belt on the drum.

Also now is a good time to do some serious cleaning. There is a lot of built up fluff after over 10 years of service.

Suspect the Hall sensor in the turbo pump rotation feedback is bad. Writing up a symptom and repair method.

 

Today I replaced the front door lock on the house of the widow of my best friend. He passed from a combination of covid and cancer. A really bad way to go. I did get the door lock replacement completed, but it was not a lock assembly made for the type of doorway there. So it took a bit of thinking to make it fit.

 

Spending the weekend restrapping my 25 y.o. patio chairs.

 

 

Far more important than fixing all this electronics stuff. . . .
Friday - fixed the potato peeler. The blade had snapped, but it was double sided and reversible and could be taken out and replaced the other way round.
Can't have Friday without fish and chips for tea.

OMG! We have that same table and chairs. They belonged to the lovely wife Morticia when I met her 23 years ago.

 

Replaced all the smoke and CO detectors in the house about a week ago (10). Every fall, when the temperature drops, a couple of them false alarm at 3-5AM every night. Kidde (the manufacturer) replaced two that had the problem last year, and two again this year. I spent an hour on the phone trying to get them to replace all of them with the newer model that does not have this problem, but they only would replace the two that false alarmed. Many reviews of this model say they false alarm all the time both on Amazon and in on Kidde. So I went to Home Depot and bought eight more for over $400. Kidde will be getting a bill. Probably as futile as the iconic poster of the mouse giving the finger to the eagle swooping down. They know damn well they are defective. You’d think would do better for a customer.

They don't make them like they used to. All the new furniture is cheap Chinese powder coat that only lasts a few years.

This set has barely a scratch or fade on it. Worth repairing.

 

Simple "fix" to my new TV remote 'my way'.
As now they make them to children size hands, very awkward to handle, added a screw in a place to have a bump reference of the < channel > buttons as tactile guide without looking at it as they make everything f**k**n black so you cannot see sheeet anyway...

 

Repaired the volume control encoder of my car radio by dismantling and cleaning its guts with alcohol and brush. Works as new now.

 

Impressive! It seems that an encoder allows that custom processor in the radio to adjust the gain on multiple channels without all of that complicated analog signal wiring. And I have not seen such a cheap encoder before. Thanks for the picture!!

My recent repair was a couple of days ago: A refrigerator shelf in the home of a client. The cheap quality plastic parts that supported the glass shelf on the single wire support had fallen apart. So I added new supports made of stainless steel stock, 0.75 x 0.015 strip. I doubt that they will fail with age.
