It seems your "required" categories have now become mandatory. Why? What if I have no interests in those areas? I cannot update any personal info unless I select my interests from a non-applicable list.

 

Does it help to include a category of "other" or "none"?

I HATE parts in the profile that say required.
IT MUST NOT BE A MUST.
Privacy can be a great good to a lot of people.

I am a radio amateur and interested in RF, but wireless is more computer related, wich is not my RF interest.

No, it doesn't. Me selecting Other or None means, "I don't wish to share my interests with you". In fact, me not wishing to share my interests with you means, I would rather not select Other or None, I would simply prefer to leave the check boxes blank. If that lets you make more assumptions on what I want, then I'll let you have that information about me.

I would also use it.

@GopherT - I suspect since you're also active on ETO you will make a thread there regarding the same issue? (I believe they require first name, last name, country, company & interests).

I haven't been there in a while. I suspect the requirement there will encourage more private people to come here instead. Win by differentiation.

 

I still cannot update my personal information. I am currently required to select and post my "occupation" from a drop down list. Besides the fact that none apply to me, I do not wish to share that information either. I'll just have to leave my location as is.

For the record, ETO does not require an occupation,

They do want interests (via check box) but they do not limit to two or three entries. At that point selecting ALL of the options is as anonymous/useful as no answer.

They do require a first and last name but a single random letter, number or symbol in each is enough. One guy is %#.

They also require a "company" and anything can be listed there. A Mod told me some (many) people put porn site links in this free-fill text box and doubted that the porn industry is so well represented on ETO.

 

Occupation is no longer required.
I'm also in the midst of planning a migration from HTTP to HTTPS which offers security and privacy advantages (and bonus - should even give a small speed bump).
