Turning laptop LCDs into "monitors" - LVDS cables

I saw those LCD driver board kits on eBay and thought it might be something fun to try. I got some junk laptops and ordered a couple T.VST59.031 kits (HDMI, VGA, etc.) but I'm not sure about compatibility for the LVDS cables. As far as I can see the ones that are in the laptops cannot be re-used for this purpose. I see LVDS cables on eBay that list a large number of LCDs as compatible but I'm not sure.

Can you buy generic ones that work with a lot of LCDs, or do you have to look at the pin specs for the board kit and the specific LCD and custom make a cable yourself for that LCD?
