Even 'evil' is relative. Why do you think that most armies are made up of the very young of society, they are 'Invincible' and also very easy to instill discipline during the boot camp stage where the camaraderie bonds are made.
Most are raised in a religions background where they are instilled with commandments, one of which is usually 'Thou shall not kill'.
But then a rifle is place in their hands and they instructed to go out and kill the 'enemy' many of which include women and children.
For the effects of war on those that partake, a very good documentary is the one by Ken Burns 10 part series on the Vietnam war, which displays the evil on both sides.
Max.
We were given UN orders via naval command to assist Vietnamese boat people (leaving after the US war) escaping the cross-border war with Cambodia (that was pure evil on par with the German holocaust). Our (the CO) interpretation of the order was to destroy or disable 'pirates' (law of the sea) attacking those refugee boats even if the attacking 'pirate' boats had families aboard. No one batted an eye about those women and children being killed or wounded. We were told NOT to rescue any of the refugees because that would require a deviation off our military mission (attacking bad guys with Cobra gunships) if we had to deliver them to a camp in Thailand or Philippines. For those unlucky refugee women and children who at first believed they were saved by our ship, we dropped a few bags of rice, gave them fuel and minimal medical treatment on a overcrowded boat before moving on to the next one, to at the very least a horrible existence at the hands of those 'pirates' we missed if captured by them. I'd like to believe they all made but we know that many did not.
