Theory on when to use each voltage regulating method

As an absolute beginner I'm not really sure of all the theory, but from practical experience in the circuit above, yes we can.

I've been using the zeners ever since Bill suggested them without problem, but since I don't have the right zeners on hand for my final product (I need 18v) I went back to simply connecting the timer to the first 9v battery in a series of three.
This works to give me 27v on the bridge and 9v on the 555.

However, you may want to ask an expert - I've gotten some comments saying that using one battery is wrong and others saying that the zeners would do a poor job of regulating. So maybe this is one of those things that varies depending on your usage scenario.
