Ouch.

So, who won?
Cami (my dog) "won" as the porcupine is dead. She had a moment of pure euphoria going at it. Then she realized what the payback was. It took double the amount of drugs to keep her sedated so my bill was very high. Vet thinks it is because she is likely 10% or so wolf.

Very affectionate dog.

I've been trying to teach puppy Toro to swim in the pool for the last few weeks. Keeping it low pressure: he doesn't like the feeling of not having solid ground under his feet -- some dogs are like that. But swimming is excellent low-impact exercise for dogs, especially for high-drive dogs that require lots of activity. So it's worth working on.

Well, today Toro taught himself to swim.

But not the way I wanted.

I was sitting out back today -- drinking a few Guinness (naturally) -- and I realized I had no idea where Toro was (he was hanging with my a few minutes ago).

So, I go looking for him and -- dammit -- he's out in the lake (dirty, nasty, smelly stuff) paddling with a HUGE smile on his face: "Look, daddy! Look what I'm doing!"

I couldn't yell at him (remember, I want him to swim), but now that he's discovered the lake, I'll never keep him out.

This was always a danger. All my other dogs loved the pool, but he seems to have taken a liking to the lake. Really not much I can do but keep a close eye on him in the backyard from now on.

While I haven't a clue what lives in your lake I have a big lake and they call it Erie. We had a hot July which along with farm runoff has created a heck of an algae bloom. Many of the dogs swimming in the lake and of course lapping up some of the lake water became suddenly very ill with some dying. The sudden rise in dogs getting real sick was attributed to the lake. While Lake Erie is actually pretty clean, clean enough our water supply crib is 5 miles offshore, algae is heck on dogs.

Here is a story about it in the Cincinnati newspaper. Obviously up here on the lake shore we saw a lot more of the problem than way down in Cincy but just a heads up. We have a nice local real clean creek I take the dogs to. Well now just the dog as we lost one a few weeks ago. He had a good run and life but the day you let them into your life you know the day for goodbye will come. Just sucks when it does.

It's just lots of algae. And sometimes giardia (which worries me but it's not fatal and I know how to take care of it). The water comes from the Everglades.

Really, I just don't like the fact that I'm likely to have to wash him off each time I let him run loose out back.

Are you kidding? Toro is only 9 months old, but he is fierce and BIG. The gators better watch out!

I'll post a new pic of him when I get a chance.
I remember his first tiny puppy pictures and I think he is a shepherd?

I have a picture of Charlotte swimming.

Like Toro she has grown and is now two. Goldens just seem to be drawn to water. More than once she went head first into her water bowl.

That's why Goldens and Labs are called water dogs... And pond water can't smell any worse than swamp water.

Yeah, he got big. The shepherds are a cool breed.

Granddaughter with her dog Brutus. Thinking she was about 5 or 6 then and now she is a HS Sophomore. Brutus is still with us.
