You could make the case that amateur radio has always been digital due to morse code. Packet radio was just starting when I got my amateur license ~50 years ago and was an offshoot of Radio Teletype which is truly digital. RTTY and even Morse code is still going strong and now I even use my smartphone to make voice digitized contacts on the 2-meter and 70-centimeter band and repeaters for those bands. Recently purchased and put on the air an ICOM IC-9700 transceiver for 2-Meters (144MHz), 70-centimeters (443MHz), and 1.2GHz which is designed to accommodate all the latest digital modes including internet access and satellite communications.

Edit: Also, the IC-9700 is a fully Software Defined Radio (Analog to Digital) receiver and filtering, with Digital to Analog processing on the transmit side as well as fully digital transmit modes. There are 2 USB ports plus an Ethernet port as well and the SDR can be externally programmed as well as from the radio interface controls. Even the HF Analog transceivers have integrated SDR with digital filtering into them as well as USB/Enet and at least an RTTY digital transmit mode. Most newer Amateur radios are now SDR with LCD displays and have eliminated analog meters and emulate analog metering on the LCD. Still DAC transmit for the most part but becoming more digital every year.
