I've got an ancient AVO valve tester which you would be welcome to except that it's here in UK and it's big and heavy

WOW!!! that brings back memories!!! I had exactly the same model back in the 70's and it was worth it's weight in gold. When I sold my business, my ex partner scrapped it !!!! DUH! Should the T.S not want it, Please let me know as my little club could put it to good use. :)

It did work the last time I used it but that was more than 20 years ago. It is in West Cumbria so we would have to work out how to get it to you.

Yes that could present a problem, let me ask around and see if I have any of my friends going your way in the near future. Thanks :)

It gets worse - next they half wave rectified it to reduce dropper dissipation. When solid state tuners arrived, they put a VDR in the bottom of the chain to get a "regulated" supply for it. Wattless droppers were fashionable for a while - till the electricity company went ballistic.

I vaguely recall that the heaters in a 40's era radio were in series with a capacitor, Maybe this was the Wattless configuration, May be I'm wrong as I never saw one.
