Were you on duty when she received the Squadron Eight Battle "E" award?

Nope; I was part of the crew that earned the award (the crew that pioneered the nautical charts and seized the cocaine), but was already out of the Navy when it was bestowed. I suppose if I wanted to, I could put that award in my shadow box, but I don't know if it would be technically "legit".Nice!....

That's the sentiment of most nukes, and a sentiment that I share to some extent. I look back pleasantly on my time served, but that's only after having been out for a few years. I wouldn't want to go back.I was on the 708, USS Minneapolis - St. Paul. I really didn't want anything to do with government contracts anymore. I got a really bad taste for the military during my 10 years.
I always saw that as a result of the one down-side to the military ranking system. People advance in rank, mostly based on technical ability (or sheerly by time) so you end up with people in charge who really have no business leading anyone. They don't have the right mind for it. High scores on advancement tests does not equal capacity to manage people or resources. The thing I DO like about their advancement system is that it is in the best interest of the senior person to train the junior person. As soon as the junior gets trained up, it takes the load off the senior so that the senior can move on. The system promotes this. Here in the civilian world it's the opposite. Expect no valueable training from your immediate superiors; it's not in their best interest to teach you everything (or even anything) they know, because then you become just as, or more, valuable to the company as they are. competition.Don't get me wrong, it did great things for me, but I would never do it again. There are far too many things that I saw as gross mis-management of resources/time/money. Its an extremely wasteful community.
Yes get the heck out of norfolk if you don't want anything to do with the military. So finding a job in this area that is in my field, that does not deal with the government, is difficult at best. I'm ready to leave this area anyways. Change is a good thing, and thanks to everyone for your kind words.
Ya,it seems as in your picture you don't look very old,at least not that much to have a kid of 15 to 16 years old ,at your age its not very usual, anyway I am 22+ and even at 30 may be I can't think to have a kid "maintaining myself is well enough".R!f@@ said:Oh..I should have mentioned.
I adopted her when she was two and I was like 24 I think.
