I went to my daughter's 1st grade Christmas party at her school today, wearing my work jacket. As I was standing in line to check in, I reached into my pocket and felt something in there. Wasn't sure what it was, so I pulled it out. It was a box cutter. Being not very situationally aware, I just stood there for a few seconds staring at it, thinking about how it got there, going over the sequence of events of the past few days, trying to recall the last place I used it, etc. Then it dawned on me " oh crap, this probably isn't the time or place to have a weapon in your hand and a thousand mile stare on your face" and I quickly slipped it back in my pocket. I didnt want to look up because I was afraid that all 50-something people in the lobby were probably staring at me. Slowly my eyes drifted up and cautiously surveyed my surroundings. Nobody was looking at me, not even the cop. Phew! Sigh of relief.

This was my older daughter's school. She is 6 years old. My younger daughter is 10 mos.

Happy birthday to your son! Is he walking yet?

My daughter has walked a few times, 5 steps maximum, then she falls. She started calling me "dada" a couple of months ago and now she calls everybody "dada"; grandma, mama, sister, everybody is "dada"

One of the many purposes of the first and second amendments is to prevent tyranny from occurring in the first place so there isn't a reason to have to overthrow anything. It has been working pretty well for that past 200+ years so a big fail to your cute little cartoon.

Actually, that's wrong. The second ammendment is absolutely not intended to prevent tyranny. Participation in the system was the expected prevention: voting, juries, public office. The second ammendment was designed for the protection of the country; that's what the militias were for, and what the military is for.

By your reasoning we can say that eating tomatoes has worked well at preventing tyranny for the past 200+ years too. So a big fail with your reasoning there.

But 200 years for a government is a flash in the pan. Its actually an incredibly new country.

But it has! In every factual movie I've seen in monarch EU the Tyrants have been punished by throwing tomatoes at them. (Don't worry about the fact tomatoes are from the new world and didn't exist in EU during the middle ages.) :) ;)

That cartoon is a lie. One reliable estimate was that about 900,000 people a year use guns to defend themselves or prevent a crime.

When Jimmy Carter let castro empty his prisons and insane asylums and they all landed in Florida, the citizens there armed themselves. Crime went DOWN not up.

Remember when OJ beat the rap at his trial and much of Los Angeles got burned down? I remember some business owners standing guard in front of their stores with "assault weapons"... guess which stores didn't get burned down by the looters.

It's not a simple issue.

My mistake.... private firearms prevent crime 2.5 Million times per year:

University Study Confirms
Private Firearms
Stop Crime 2.5 Million Times Each Year

[SIZE=+1]Gary Kleck, Ph.D. is a professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida State University in Tallahassee and author of "Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America" (Aldine de Gruyter, 1991), a book widely cited in the national gun-control debate. In an exclusive interview, Dr. Kleck revealed some preliminary results of the National Self- Defense Survey which he and his colleague Dr. Marc Gertz conducted in Spring, 1993. Though he stresses that the results of the survey are preliminary and subject to future revision, Kleck is satisfied that the survey's results confirm his analysis of previous surveys which show that American civilians commonly use their privately-owned firearms to defend themselves against criminal attacks, and that such defensive uses significantly outnumber the criminal uses of firearms in America. The new survey, conducted by random telephone sampling of 4,978 households in all the states except Alaska and Hawaii, yield results indicating that American civilians use their firearms as often as 2.5 million times every year defending against a confrontation with a criminal, and that handguns alone account for up to 1.9 million defenses per year. Rare to hear a mainstream media outlet admit this:

Do Concealed Guns Reduce Crime?

More Guns, Less Crime sounds like an oxymoron, but it is the title of a provocative book by economist John R. Lott.

The thesis of Lott's book and of the nationwide crusade associated with it is encapsulated in its title: Lott maintains that counties in the United States that have enacted laws freely allowing for the carrying of concealed handguns have seen a decrease in confrontational crimes such as murder, assault, robbery, and rape.

Gun as Defensive Tool
//////// If Lott's thesis is correct, regression coefficients relating confrontational crime rates to the passage of laws that require officials to issue concealed weapon permits are negative. That is, more guns, less crime. The values of these coefficients are also statistically significant, not likely to have occurred by chance.

Does Threat Convince Criminals?
////// His basic argument is that the increased cost to would-be perpetrators (i.e., the risk of being caught or shot) convinces them to refrain from murder, rape, robbery, and assault. Guns used defensively, or even the prospect of guns being used defensively by potential victims, is enough to scare some criminals into pursuing less violent careers.

/////

The bottom line is that our understanding of crime rate fluctuations is still very murky. Why the sudden precipitous drop in the murder rate in New York City, for example — the economy, demographics, enforcement? Cultural factors, while hard to quantify, certainly play an important role.
Some countries like Japan have few guns and little violent crime, whereas others have few guns and a lot of crime. Similar variation holds in countries with a lot of guns. In Switzerland and Israel a very high percentage of citizens have guns and the crime rate is low, whereas in this country many people have guns and the crime rate is high (although down considerably from its peak).

I can quote outlandish false studies too. All the evidence gathered continues to show that guns in any situation make it more violent and more likely for someone to be shot or killed.

And it's funny that someone should mention the brits. LOL As if the American Revolution was just fought by armed citizens. LOL

It was heavily influenced by French money, French guns, and French soldiers. There were tons of paid mercenaries. A handful of citizens may have stayed and fought, but most of the farmers went back to their farms early on.

Good job distorting history, guys. LOL

And if guns are the protection against tyranny, then all the gun nuts should be against a big military. But they aren't. Do they think they can overthrow the biggest military on the planet? LOL

They should also have been against the Patriot Act. That's fascism right there. But they weren't.

It really comes down to gun proponents are hugely authoritarian and fascist.

Seems topic is running towards its end. (Well, at least I hope so.)
So ...

--- 1/3 ---
Let's examine some more of these 'security drugs':
Fire extinguishers
Life insurance
Health insurance
AEDs
Police
Pepper spray
Home burglar alarms
401K/"rainy day savings"
...

When I think of a person giving up one or all of these 'drugs' voluntarily, the first words that come to mind are not *educated* or *mature*
Of course you do. Ridicule being a very powerful weapon to self-defend one's needs against intrusion.

I just watched the NRA speech on international cable news.

It was handled very impressively by them I thought. No waffle, no political posturing, no focus on blaming any group, no discussion of any gun restrictions.
How do you figure that, in relation to this:
And here's another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal: There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people.

Through vicious, violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse. And here's one: it's called Kindergarten Killers. It's been online for 10 years. How come my research department could find it and all of yours either couldn't or didn't want anyone to know you had found it?

Or are you specifically saying NRA is not blaming any specific social groups of people. (As they do seem to try to put some blame on other stuff if you ask me. ... And they do seem to blame the media as group, but that's only for hiding stuff of course.)

And a notable quote from the speech; "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun... Is a good guy with a gun."
I'm not sure, but I don't think the NRA has proven yet that good guy's always win in a gun fight.

---

And here's another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal:
Mmm, this kinda remind me of a relative that has gone off the deep end. And just about anything it ultimately backed up by a conspiracy theory that the truth is being deliberately hidden by other groups.
