I'm currently building a magnetic levitator as a project my spare time. I'm just about through with my breadboard save one piece I cannot find. The schematics for a tip122 closest I found my boxer Park City tip50. Would the tip50 work? I sincerely Appreciate any help in advance

The TIP50 voltage rating is OK, but the continuous current is only 20% of the TIP122, so I would say it is not suitable if the coil draws more than 1 Amp.

hi,
Use a ammeter to measure the coil current, that will be a good guide in finding an equivalent transistor.
