HI. I would like to know if when replacing a potentiometer I have to look at the characteristics of the old one or can I put a similar one?
The one to be replaced is mounted on a board that regulates the speed of an electric motor.

Yes. The resistance, taper, power rating, and type of construction should be the same.

Having said that, it really depends on the specific application and details of the actual circuit.

For example, you might be able to replace a linear taper 200kΩ pot used as a voltage divider with a linear taper 250kΩ pot.
