Indeed Gadget is right, tea is a name for your evening meal, although in the UK we say that only the posh call it "tea"!
I always thought that it was the other way around! Someone told me once that if you live north of Sheffield, then you have tea and that only people in Midland and southern England have dinner :D

You know I agree with you there but everyone I speak to tells me otherwise. I'm from Manchester and we all call it "tea", but Manchester is hardly the height of sophistocation and high-society! I think the idea that "tea" is posh comes from Cricket where they stop for "Lunch" and "Tea" breaks - I couldn't imagine the MCC not using appropriate etiquette!

Psst, I've been doing that for years!! :D

So which is the posh one then, Supper or Dinner?

Dave
Your country kin-folk call it Dinner. The Yankees from up north call it supper. And no, every soda is not a "coke". Yankees spout trash like that to cover up their own ignorance of calling it "soda pop" and "pop". When someone asks what kind of coke would you like, "sprite" is not a valid answer. Coke, diet, caffeine free, caffeine free diet, blak, lime, vanilla, cherry, and any other word that has "coke" beside it is.

Pepsi just sucks bullocks. Twice.

As far as we are concerned in the UK soda is carbonated water - not coke, sprite, pepsi or any other soft drink. That said m4yh3m I agree, sprite is not coke, like fanta is not coke etc...etc

It is no surprise that us Brits just stick to Beer!!!

Well if you ever come to the States.... BYOB. There *IS* one thing that certainly reflects the quality of intelligence here in the States..especially here in the south... and that's <strike>piss in a can</strike> beer. How they managed to make it "Light" is beyond me... it still is nasty as hell. I've thrown up bile that's had a sweeter after taste. I've learned to take nothing less than 100 proof spirits. Of course, if you fancy a shaggin, buy some of that garbage and take it to one of the local colleges. I went downtown with a friend and saw some college students playing drinking games with BUD LITE. I thought the point was to GET DRUNK using an array of vodkas, tequilas, and various mixed drinks in between. When I saw that, I lost hope. Then again, I should have never had it to begin with... most of the "common folk" enjoy watching cars drive in a circle 500 times :p

We do have some good beer here in the US, it simply is not so prevalent as the bad beer. Pyramid Ales, the Deschuttes Brewing Company, the Portland Brewing Company, Butte Creek, Rogue Ales, and other such "micro" brewers produce good stuff. There are also plenty of decent brew-pubs hiding around the country.

Be aware that not all micro brewers make good beer. There's one in San Antonio that uses the local water - oil contaminated though it be. The stuff from Fort Collins is too yeasty for my liking, but some folk find it okay.

Its interesting you say that, because the UK has a rich heritage of micro-breweries and specialist ales. These have begun in the last 12 months-or-so to make a return to the mainstream. Go into any off-license or supermarket and you are guaranteed to get an entire corner dedicated to bottled special beers from all over the country. Generally speaking, it is vastly superior to the mass-produced pap we readily sup at the pub.

As for the "yeasty" flavour, some would argue that that is what drinking Real-Ale is all about! Ask the guys at CAMRA over here!

When I get the chance to go to England, I'll be sure to get tanked up and "Go for an English".

"Ok Jams, first off we'll have 10, no, 12 bread rolls. Bring some of that fancy stuff too... ah butter..."

"What's the blandest thing on the menu?"

Wow... I'm sooo glad we can help clog the arteries of countries! This is the plan for world domination ;) We're already immune to it...

Killing other countries one hamburger at a time.

So why bother about our "tasteless", "bland", "healthy" pap we serve up as food - long live the grease!

Oh, you could try fish 'n' chips - that clogs the arteries

Goodness Gracious Me - one of the BBC's greatest incranations of late!

Truely fantastic, though I haven't seen that one. I have experienced the nights that they are parodying in that sketch and it makes brilliiant viewing to see such a take on it. It is probably a sad reflection of British culture that we (constantly) do this kind of thing on a Friday night...but hey if it makes the rest of the world laugh!
