Once there is a back door in a service, it would be vulnerable to attack. Any sufficiently capable group could gain access to the encrypted information – which could pose a far bigger inconvenience to security services than not having sweeping access to WhatsApp messages. If you create a backdoor for the good guys, you create a backdoor for the bad guys too.

I consider it a game changer because it sets a precedent. And therefore a glimpse of things to come.
What precedent is that? This old rule did nothing to stop the real users of personal data like Facebook and Google.
Online privacy wasn't taken way because you ever really had it anyway. That the Obama rule didn't change that. You want your online privacy? You take it into your own hands (VPNs, etc...) to make it happen.

The precedent that I'm referring to is the official resistance to change in a better, non-intrusive direction for the citizen.
I agree with what you're saying, but it won't surprise me if pretty soon laws are pushed and passed declaring such protections as you're suggesting illegal; thus leaving all of us virtually naked... then they'll tell us: "you don't like it? don't use the 'net"

Officially they say one thing and then do something else. I'd rather have the honesty of them saying, we spy and sell everything we get our little grubby hands on because unofficially that's what's happening and will continue to happen because people are making vast sums of money on it.

Yes, what you say has a grain of truth to it ... I guess I was being naïve by asking consistency from our governments... but then again, shouldn't we at least put up some resistance?

IMO the battle should be over total secrecy in communications not just privacy. Privacy (your actions) is important but privacy is always given up in times of need. Secrecy (your passwords) is what's in your head even if there is no privacy. It's the last thing you give up under duress.

The things that rock governments/groups are leaks of secrets they want to keep hidden. Government scandals about just privacy usually involve cheating spouses.

Sex within marriage is private (usually ); the affair the wife is having is secret.

Going to and using the toilet was absolutely not private on a my old Navy ship. NO partitions between crappers in group areas.
After Trump Signed a EO on Data Sharing new in the news this morning, my IT Admin said he might consider the VPN option at home and at the Uni as a service. Not sure what that meant but, he's going to get back to me. I guess it's a Monthly fee.

Here's top 10 from this site. https://www.top10vpn.com/best-vpn-for-usa/?v=2&bsid=c33se1kw196&gclid=CO7nurWH_NICFUpNfgoduXAMpg

Edit: Not sure how that could work at the Uni, home I get.

When my nephew got out of prison, I had to re-teach him to close the bathroom door.

I don't need to connect to 60+ countries, but I don't think it's the governments' business how many times I log on to AAC.
