I would expect some change in inductance but not that much. Field lines want to take the shortest path so I would think no matter
the position of the rod there would be a large amount of leakage flux exiting the rod before got to the ends. I think we need one of those
magnetic field analysis programs to see how the flux path changes as a function of position.
