Many moons ago I used to be in a band, playing Bass guitar ... we got to be quite good, actually, although we never performed in public.

Anyway, I once used a supposedly silicon-based lubricant/cleaner on a couple of noisy pots in my amplifier, and things got better at first but then they got worse after a couple of days!

I have no experience with the Deoxit thingy being discussed here. But my advice would be to use it first on one or two of the most bothersome pots in your device and test the result for at least a couple of days before spraying the entire thing.

As a side note, I would spray the pot's inside first and then rotate it several times from zero to max to make sure that its wiper gets to clean the whole length of its track.

Just on the exposed RCA connections so far. The Deoxit immediately removes the white oxide off the connector and makes it slide smooth as silk.

 

Further, I'd like to know: is there a risk in trying to clean parts so old? I'd rather she have a crackly amp than no amp at all.

JUST SPRAYING an appropriate cleaner will not be risky. Moving things around IS risky. Using industrial contact cleaner instead of whet our experts suggest can do damage. Power OFF and UNPLUGGED is safer and much less risk of causing damage.
On most pots the access to inside is by the terminals. Opening the housing is rather risky. I HAVE cleaned pots and switches with just cheap alcohol. It did work, did not produce any damage that could be noticed.

Awesome. Like new.

First gig is scheduled two weeks from now.

Unfortunately, I am not going to be there (I'm 300 miles away) for the sound check, so I highly encouraged them to spend some time in the days before the gig learning how to make themselves sound good.

They are all young kids, and never did sound before -- aside from their little portable guitar amps and my daughter's (big) bass head/cabinet.

This'll be trial by fire.
