Patch antenna phased array

Good morning, I'm planning to build a planar phased array, the purpose of which is to perform near-field focusing (beamforming) in the non-radiating near-field (Fresnel zone), therefore in an area in front of the array. I decided to use a carrier frequency of 800 MHz, and use cavity patch antennas, and divide the antennas into two groups, the first group having a carrier frequency of 800 MHz and amplitude modulated (pulses) at 200 Hz, and the second group also having a carrier frequency of 800 MHz, and amplitude modulated at 300 Hz, to create a difference beat in the target area. My problem concerns the size of the patches, I'm undecided between half-wave or quarter-wave, the half-wave patches have greater gain and less beam distortion, but are large, while the quarter-wave patches have greater asymmetry, less gain but are smaller, so for my project which of the two options is best???

That antenna is a critical aspect of the project. Don't compromise make or break aspects unless it's absolutely necessary.

If size is make or break, like in a small cell phone, a PIFA might be one choice. If size is just a want, what will a PIFA compromise on the total design.

Excellent, I had already read the links you recommended, and yes, they talked about the fact that the presence of the pin connected to ground on the edges of the pipe increases the asymmetry, but since in near field focusing, having phase precision and symmetry is of vital importance, then I think the half-wave patch is the best choice.

@Danko @nsaspook @MisterBill2 @BobTPH @Pyrex ok, if I wanted to implement the multiarray structure, especially volumetric arrays with which all the antennas of all the arrays are powered, to be able to tighten the focus also on the Z axis, is it better to use an egg-shaped volumetric array with vivaldi antennas, or a dome structure with half-wave patch antennas??
