I didn't add the 2k to the 1k in my second I added .66 to the 1k then added the remaining 1k to = 2.66

My calculations are for the exact same circuit, just two different ways of solving it. There is obviously an order of operation which is what I'm trying to figure out.
It's not an order of operations thing at all. You are making one of the classic mistakes that people make and trying to throw an equation at a situation for which it does not apply.

In your second attempt you are using the formula for combining parallel resistors to combine resistors that are not in parallel.

In order to be in parallel, both ends of the resistors must be connected to the same nodes. While the right hand end of those two resistors are connected, the left hand ends are not, hence they are not in parallel.
