I've got a 1940's era Thompson Houston induction motor off a drill press, the stator windings have a kind of black rubber coating on them and some of it is flaking off, does anyone know what this stuff is and where I can get some or a suitable alternative ?

 

Taking a wild stab here but it sounds like dried out "liquid tape" which is a brush on liquid that dries into rubber coating.
