I have to design trigger board / pulsar with specific requirments using a "MOSFET in place of a switch and turn on and off the switch via a "gate driver". This is an IC that is pretty common so there should be some good documentation. (float it using a DC DC converter most likely) design the BNC and Fiber stuff such that it triggers the gate driver which in turn triggers the mosfet. As for the high voltage, it is what charges the capacitor to ~3 kV. Once the switch is triggered the load sees a squarish pulse of 3 kV for however long the gate driver is triggered. ". I have not taken Power electronics and need some clarification and some tips / topics that will help me understand this project better. I have a simple schematic to charge the capacitors through a high resistor , but I am not sure about gate driver and mosfet switching works. I will continue to do some research for this project but i appreciate any Insite and ideas

your description is beyond vague. try to come up with some numbers.

for starter:
what is this powered from? (state voltage value or range)
what is the power (current) of that 3kV stage?
what is the waveform of the 3kV output?

for my insulation tester i used dc supply (12-24VDC), flyback transformer wired backwards, to get some 180V then voltage multiplier to get HV. needed less than 2W at the output (adjustable 60-1400VDC). unlike normal transformers flybacks have air gap so do not saturate but need low duty pulse train (5-25%) etc

Hi,

Usually you find that out by reading the data sheet on the particular MOSFET driver you are going to use or want to think about using. That contains the information for connecting and typical operation and stuff like that.
